– Social Democratic theoretician and politician; moulded “Marxism” to make the ideas of Marx and Engels more comprehensible to workers, thereby creating a “vessel” which to this day is being filled with the most diverse content by leftists of varied provenance and then portrayed as the views of Marx and Engels; joined the USPD in 1917; chairman of the socialisation commission in 1918/19; joined the SPD in 1922; relocated to Vienna in 1924; emigrated to the Netherlands in 1938.
